HerStoryBuff: Sirimavo Bandaranaike - The World's First Female Prime Minister
🔫 SWRD Bandaranaike, the fourth Prime Minister of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), was assassinated on September 25, 1959 at Bandaranaike's residence, known as Tintagel, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
🙏 A Buddhist monk named Talduwe Somarama shot Bandaranaike. Ironically, Bandaranaike initially believed the monk was there for a blessing.
🏥 Bandaranaike succumbed to his injuries the next day, 26September 1959, after initially surviving the gunshot wounds for several hours.
⚖️ The monk, Somarama, and others involved were arrested. Somarama was later tried, found guilty, and executed in 1962.
